We honestly believe that bad stuff isn’t good for you- whether it be physically, mentally or spiritually. With a combined experience of almost 20 years in the beauty industry, we've seen this business from the inside. We grew tired of overpriced products, false claims and unpronounceable ingredients of mysterious origin.
All our formulas start in our kitchen with everyday available ingredients. We hand mix, test, re-mix and test again. If we can't touch it safely, we don't use it. We see our skin for what it is- a gateway into the human body. It is permeable, like our souls. What we put on it, gets in and becomes part of us. Our "consumer testing group" consists our family and our close friends- those most important to us. Just like you, we won't give harmful products to the people we love.
It is for this reason that we only batch on demand. We do not inventory finished goods on a shelf, somewhere in a back room. We understand that this translates to longer lead times for delivery, but we believe it is the only way to guarantee a truly fresh product. When you read our ingredient lists, you will see why.
We are always refining our formulas to make them better. We listen to feedback from our supporters, implement improvements or just plain toss the item. We never stop trying to be better because quality defines you. We use good stuff because we have a responsibility to do so. Everytime you use a product made by Kat, you show trust in us. We take that trust VERY seriously.
We think it’s about time that “beauty with a purpose” made its way into popular thinking. It is our opinion that we have lulled ourselves into what we call a “comfortable disconnection“ as retail consumers. Kat rebels against the attitude that we are not part of the moral and ethical decisions made by the manufacturers of the products we buy. We are digging in our heels and yelling NO MORE to the ongoing, unconscionable exploitation of the resources of this planet.
Kat defines “resources“ as raw materials gifted to us by nature, but more importantly- as PEOPLE. Our sales dollars give the disenfranchised a means to succeed, providing a “greater purpose“ to the work we do. Just like we believe we are obligated to use quality raw materials, we are convinced that success isn’t really success unless it has made someone’s life better in the process.
As such, Kat is working hard to put in place an end-to-end ethical, transparent supply chain. This is not an easy task for a small, home-based start up with no outside financial backing. Because we value honesty, we are telling you up front that this is "a work in progress." We will not deceive our supporters. We are not perfect yet, but we are doing our damned hardest to get there.
All our suppliers are required to disclose in writing the country of origin of their products. If we don't know where it came from, we don't use it. No exceptions.
The name of our company translates to “four small bad dogs” from Haitian Creole. Go ahead, it’s OK to say it. We have heard it all before. "What do four naughty chihuahuas have to do with body care products? Make your Brand Name something easy to remember and representative of your products! A Brand Name needs to stand out! It needs to differentiate you from your competitors." Finally, our personal favorite: “Your Brand Name can make or break you- choose wisely or fail!”
OK, whatever. Thanks for your opinion, but we don’t recall asking for it. By now, hopefully we’ve convinced you that Kat isn’t a profit-driven business. It’s about forming a connection between people and the world around them. It’s about a promise: together, we will change what needs changing. We will do what people told us not to do: lower our profit margin to improve lives. We will not condemn people to a life of poverty because “that’s the way it’s always been.”
Most importantly, we will do it humbly. This isn’t about us as individuals: we despise those who disguise blatant self-promotion as social conscience or philanthropy. We take ownership of a much greater responsibility we have as members of the human race: identify what’s broken, fix it however you can and do it for the right reasons.

An Essential Oil is a powerfully concentrated extract from a plant, usually made by the distillation process or other means, such as expression, solvent extracting or cold-pressing. Any part of the plant, including roots, leaves, stems and flowers may be used. These extracts must be diluted in a "carrier oil" such as jojoba, coconut or sweet almond oil before becoming safe for use in beauty products. Essential Oils are potent materials and must be used with the same care as all potentially irritating ingredients.
Some Essential Oils, especially those derived from citrus plants, are known to be "phototoxic" in UV light. This means that there are substances in the Essential Oil that absorb energy from the sun's rays more than our skin. It is, therefore, extremely important that manufacturers use the appropriately-processed Essential Oil in their products. We highly recommend you further educate yourself on photoxic reactions before beginning to use any product containing an Essential Oil.
A Fragrance Oil is a synthetic compound made primarily for scent or aroma purposes. It is chemically different than an Essential Oil, which is derived from a plant. Unfortunately, these two terms have become synonymous with each other in consumer products. Price and/or scent is a good indicator as to whether the oil is made in a lab: "cupcake oil" does not come from a plant. Some Fragrance Oils are made to be used in body products, but must be used knowledgeably in very specific formula ratios.
Kat uses the word "natural" on products that are made of exclusively plant-based ingredients. Consumers are becoming aware, rightly so, of the overwhelming misuse of this word in the health, beauty and food industries. It is a misleading adjective that has no definition, yet connotes a choice that is "healthier" or "better for you." Lawmakers, as well as consumer advocacy groups, are closely scrutinizing products describing themselves as "natural" and taking appropriate action to stop this false advertising. We support any and all efforts towards better educating consumers about this issue.
Before purchasing any product containing an Essential Oil or Fragrance Oil, review and understand each ingredient. Research the properties of the plant the Essential Oil is derived from. If you have never used an ingredient before, treat it with extra caution. When in doubt, always pass on purchasing the product. Always perform a "skin-patch" test to make sure you do not have an adverse reaction to the product after purchase. Follow the directions carefully. (We're Moms. Your safety is more important to us than your purchase dollars.)
This section is not optional. There are numerous health conditions for which Essential Oils are known hazards. Pregnant and nursing women should not use any product containing an Essential Oil. Essential Oils may cause an interaction with existing medication. Essential Oils have different dosage recommendations for adults and children. Serious illnesses, such as high-blood pressure or asthma, can be worsened by the use of Essential Oils. Never ingest Essential Oils. Never expose pets to Essential Oils. We take this very seriously- so should you.

This company publishes extensive information about Aromatherapy, Essential Oil use and safety, plus data about each individual Essential Oil. Below is a list of "attributes" taken from the NOW website about the most commonly used Essential Oils. We encourage you to use this website as a source of education for yourself and others. It is one of the best we have seen.

This documentary changed our business model and opened our eyes to the unknown consequences of our "best-intention" behaviors. We discovered the nonprofit organization, REBUILDglobally, and its business partner, deux mains designs, when we were shopping for hand-crafted goods made in Haiti. While the Food and Drug Administration has not yet set "quality standards" for Essential Oils or products containing them, there are articles published to educate consumers. We look forward to more scrutiny on the Essential Oil and Fragrance Oil product industry and any support any legislation to protect consumers from the hazards of using substandard materials and the results of false claims.

There is more incorrect than correct information on the web about Essential Oils and Aromatherapy. Everyday, we see contradictory statements and even some potentially dangerous ones. What is the definition of ethical sourcing?
"Ethically sourced goods are produced and purchased in a manner that demonstrates respect for the people who produce them as well as for the environment."
We could write volumes about why having an ethical supply chain is part of Kat’s identity. The reason is simple: We think it’s hypocritical to buy raw materials produced through exploitive labor practices when you strive for dignified employment. Our goal is to put in place an end-to-end transparent supply chain by June of 2019. For a home-based artisan beauty line, solely operated by two working moms with no outside funding sources- this is proving to be the most challenging part of our endeavors.
Below is a partial list of Kat's current suppliers. Each of these companies has identified the origin of the raw material or packaging we use in our products. These companies are more than suppliers- they are full partners helping us achieve a Kat's larger goal. We hope you will consider using them for your own needs.
